Sykes, George E., Jr., of North Eastham, MA, Seekonk Chief of Police, Ret., died Saturday at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Cornelia A., and Gregory A. Scott. He was the beloved husband of the late Nancy J. (Sheridan). Born in Seekonk, son of the late George E. and Augusta V. (Gleasner) Sykes. He grew up and worked on the family dairy farm in Seekonk before joining the town's Police force in 1957, later retiring as Chief in 1981. During his long life, there were many accomplishments, along the way including; earning his private pilot's license, racing stock cars at Seekonk Speedway, playing semi-pro hockey for the Worcester Warriors and being a well known Fast Pitch softball pitcher, earning his bachelor's degree in Law Enforcement and becoming a Mason and member of Netop Lodge, now Eastern Star Lodge in Rehoboth. George also was former Captain of the Seekonk Fire Dep't volunteers, Station #3 and was a member of the Seekonk Lions and Mass & New England Police Chiefs' Assoc. Other surviving family members include; sons, George E. Sykes, III,(wife Jayne), Andrew C. Sykes, daughters Virginia Lewis, (husband Chris), N. Jane Hogan, husband (Patrick), sisters, Barbara Fahey, Marjorie Cary, 9 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. Calling hours will be held on Thursday, Dec. 27'th from 9-11 AM, in the J.H. WILLIAMS & CO. Funeral Home, 210 Taunton Ave., East Providence, RI. The funeral, celebration of his life and burial will be private.
